Genealogy & Local History

The Bloomfield Public Library houses a variety of materials chronicling Bloomfield. Some of the material is in the Reference area, but most are available upstairs in our Special collections area.

We are currently working on digitizing a lot of our special collections.  Research for residents who live outside of Bloomfield is performed as time permits.  Fees for services may apply depending on the complexity of the request (to be determined by the Special Collections Librarian). Call the Reference Desk at 973-566-6200 or email the Reference Department.

Ancestry Resources

  • Ancestry Library Edition  - Available for in-library use only. Provides access to billions of records from census data, vital records, directories, photos, maps and more, including military collections and collections from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and other international collections.

  • The Bloomfield Public Library is now a designated FamilySearch Affiliate Library  - A camera with a key icon indicates the records you are viewing at home can only be viewed in a Family History Center or designated Affiliate Library.  Log into your account in the library to view these records.  If you log into your account in the library and still see the locked record icon, then you will need to go to a Family History Center to view the record (the nearest one is in North Caldwell)

  • HeritageQuest -  is a comprehensive treasury of American genealogical sources—rich in unique primary sources, local and family histories, and finding aids. Access HeritageQuest in the library or at home with your Bloomfield Public Library Card.
