The Bloomfield Public Library is pleased to offer our patrons materials for learning English
as a Second Language. These self-study materials are available in
Spanish, French, Russian, Italian, Arabic, Chinese, Portuguese and many other languages.
We offer books, dictionaries, DVDs, videos, and CD-ROMs.
Through our program, you can make a difference in an immigrant's life by tutoring English
for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) with Literacy Volunteers of America and the
Bloomfield Public Library. To become an ESOL tutor, you must speak and read English
and have an interest in helping others. No knowledge of a foreign language or teaching
experience is needed.
Training is free! Literacy Volunteers of America provides workshop training to prepare you
for your new position. All books and materials are provided at no cost, and ongoing staff
support is always available. In addition, the Bloomfield Public Library has materials
designed to help with the program. This has been made possible in whole or in part by a
Literacy Grant from the New Jersey State Library, an affiliate of Thomas Edison State
College, with funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services through the
Library Services and Technology Act.
As an ESOL tutor, you may select a time and meeting site that is convenient for you and your
student. Tutors and students are always welcome to use the dedicated tutor area on the second
floor of the Bloomfield Public Library.
For more information on how to become a tutor, contact Literacy Volunteers of America/Essex County
